Is there a limit to the number of players?
No, there is no limit to the number of players, in fact, the more the merrier! However, each player will need a set of dice, tokens and shaker, so you may need to buy that 2nd game for large groups.
What is the correct way to shake the dice?
Simply leave your dice on the table, place the shaker over them, and slide the shaker side to side. The shaker is specially designed to mix the dice quickly and easily. Experts can even master ‘off the table’ shaking moves, a skill that involves shaking the dice on the table, then lifting the shaker quickly off the table, whilst shaking the dice mid-air.
What happens if a player drops a dice during shaking?
This is counted as a foul, and the offending player must place one token immediately in the centre of the table.
What happens if my dice are sitting on top of each other after shaking?
If a player after shaking their dice, notices that one or more dice are sitting on top of each other under thier shaker, they simply lift their shaker and announce/show the problem to the other players. They can then reshake with no penalty.
Are One’s able to be used as wild to make a straight?
No. The ONLY time a one can be used in a straight is as a natural at the start of 1-2-3-4-5. One’s cannot be used as a wild to make up a straight- for example 2-3-4-1-6 is not a straight.
When do Ones cease to be wild?
One’s cease to be wild once they are called in play during or at the start of a set. For example play may have gone around the table for say 6 calls, the last call being “9 fives”. Then the next player in turn calls “9 ones” ( remmember ones are the highest value dice ). From that momment on all dice are counted a natural – i.e. ones are no longer wild and CANNOT be used in the tallying process. So all calls from then on during the set can only rely on natural dice – i.e. if the next player calls “10 sixes”, then there must be 10 actual sixes ( called Natural ) on the table, He/She cannot use any ones at all. In the event of a challenge however, any challenges made against a player whose last call was made BEFORE the ones were called, may still include any ones as wild in the tallying process.
When is reversing play allowed?
In two situations:
- At the commencement of a set the losing player of the previous set may elect for play to start in either direction – clockwise or anti-clockwise.
- During a set, a player can only reverse the direction of play when his call raises the call by 2 levels. For example if the previous player called ” 5 threes”, the call must be a minumum of “7 threes” (“6 threes” is one level, “7 threes” is two levels ) or “6 fours, fives, sixes or ones” ( remember ones are of highest value, so “5 threes, fours, fives or ones” is one level, “6 threes, fours, fives or ones” is two levels).
There is no limit to the number of times during a set that play can be reversed. This can be a good strategy to “pick on” a particular player – nasty but great fun!
What are the origins of Palko the Game?
PALKO® the game was first introduced to Australia in 2003 by Palko Pty.Ltd. and is also known as Liar’s Dice, or Pirate’s Dice, made famous in the 2006 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. It is essentially the same game, but has simplified rules. Based on a popular dice game played in China & South America, there are many other name and rule variations of the game around the world, such as Dudo, Cachito, Perudo or Dadinho. The main difference is by challenging your opponents, the loser forfeits a token, not a dice. There are many variations on the rules, and you can create your own house rules.
